The Love Of Coffee
Freshly brewed coffee, a perfectly timed, aromatic good morning. I roll over, my eyes unopened, drifting between memories of my childhood kitchen, my parents and grandparents, the coffee shops I worked at through my twenties, and the present moment of my husband snuggled in next to me. The nourishment I receive from coffee is more than just a caffeine kick. It is the ability to travel through time and reflect on all the moments I have experienced with that warm, fragrant cup of liquid gold.
How often do we turn to God yearning for a quick “caffeine kick”? Are we receiving true nourishment if we are only looking to Him out of desperation, exhaustion or a need for healing?
What if our relationship with God was as comforting and stable as my (and possibly your?) relationship with coffee?
Although God does want us to reach out to Him in our desperation and times of need, He also wants to share in our joy, laughter, and simple daily activities. He desires to be a part of our lives in a way that is more than just “an energy boost”.
“The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on earth. He made their hearts, so he understands everything they do.” (Psalm 33:13-15 NLT)
God wants to experience life with us, to share in memories, thoughts, emotions and reflections. He created our hearts, so that we may know how precious we are to Him.
“You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!” (Psalm 139:15-17 NLT)
As you grab your next cup of coffee, share it with God. Tell Him something about yourself like your favorite book, or hobby; a funny joke or a beautiful moment you witnessed. Look to your Heavenly Father for comfort, joy, laughter, and friendship. Though He knows the happenings of the past, present and future, He adores experiencing it through your individual heart.
